Unlike fragile redware, stoneware is more solid. Stoneware was popular during 19th century. Stoneware clay was often found along the mid-atlantic coast areas, such as New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and also found in Ohio and Texas. Stoneware of early days were mostly wheel-thrown. In late 19th century, as the technology advanced, more sophicated method was introduced to make crocks and jugs in a fraction of a time.

Stoneware usually fires to a waterproof state, so technically it does not need to be glazed. But in general, they were still glazed. The most popular method to glaze was salt glazing, in which lots of salts were vaporized and combined with the outside layer of pottery to build a clear finish. Interior finish was glazed separately because the salt vapor cannot reach the inside.

At the beginning, stoneware was produced for storage. As the technology advanced, more sophicated shapes became possible. More and more people used stoneware for decoration purposes. You can find stoneware varies in many shapes including birds, ships, flowers, animals, human figures and sometime even a whole village scene.

Here are some commonly seen stoneware:

bank

bean pot

bottle

bowl including batter, mixing, serving, and etc.

corker

dish

flask

flowerpot

fruit jar

jug, including batter jug, miniature jug, molasses jug, presentation jug and etc

mug

pitcher

sander

spice jar

vase

water cooler

Redware pottery is made from a number of clays. To store liquid, redware must be glazed inside and sometime outside too. Most of redware were produced in Pennsylvania. Potters made in Pennsylvania usually covered with an opaque cream color slip with the red clay body. There are several types of redware jar. Early redware jars were built like a vessel with egg-shaped body and most of them have fairly plain design. They were made in small shops for local community. And another factor is the jars and lids were usually made separately, so they need to be numbers so that they can fit. The jars were glazed inside and also outside. The redware jars were introduced around 1790, so they are pretty hard to find. Another type of redward jar is redware spice jar which was introduced in 1800 and through 1860. They were not called exactly as spice jar but just called by many collectors. The name may come from the small shape with shoudler accentuated by 2 lines. Its sides slope sharply to neck. It’s not confirmed that such jar was actually made for storing spice even though it was often used to store herbs and spices.

There is another type of redward jar, which is called redware preserve jar. The redware preserve jar was made at the pottery of Alvin Wilcox. It has a typical high shouldered shape andit was made during 19th century.

There are a variety of bowls with different sizes and shapes. Most of bowls are made of native clay. The earliest bowls were drape molded but few can be found now. Before 1850, bowls were made of red earthenware and stoneware. Later on, bowls were made of ironstone, white and yellow earthenware.

There are a few common types of bowls, including mixing bowls, serving bowls, soup and salad bowls. Mixing bowls can be seen everywhere, most of them are made of yellow earthenware decorated with bands of white or brown slip. Some mixing bowls are made of stoneware, which are heavier than yellow earthenware mixing bowls. Before 1850, cooking bowls were also used for serving too. After 1850, special bowls were made for serving meals. Serving bowls of earlier ages were made in English ironstone with oval or round shape. In the late 18th century, small bowls for serving salad or soup became available, most of which had a clear glaze and were made in redware.
